Pauwel Kwak

Kwak
Belgian Strong Amber Ale
8.1% ABV
Buggenhout, Belgium
Huge bubbly head, that lasts.
Very sweet and malty.
I usually only have one since it is so sweet.
Tastes delicious, with flavors of caramel, and brown sugar.
Also toffee and apple cider with a hint of banana.
Made with three malts, including wheat. White candy sugar added to kettle.
Michael Jackson (in Great Beers of Belgium) likened the finish to
 "Caramelized Bananas."
 ........
The unique glass is called a stirrup glass and according to lore
it was how the beer of the region was served to horsemen riding through the area so they could rest it in their stirrup while watering the horses. Also according to lore, Pauwel (Paul) Kwak (a reference to being fat) was a local innkeeper who brewed strong, dark beer which became the beer for the area which eventually died out. The style of beer was revived in semi recent years
