Midnight Sun T.R.E.A.T.

T.R.E.A.T.
(The Royal Eccentric Ale Treatment)
Imperial Chocolate Pumpkin Porter
7.8 % ABV. 30 IBU
Gold Medal GABF 2007
Midnight Sun Brewing Company
Anchorage, Alaska
Although this is a Halloween Seasonal,
I think it would be better as a Thanksgiving Treat.
It would go great with Pumpkin Pie, or Pumpkin Cheesecake.
The pumpkin flavors are not too strong in this.
The rich roasted chocolate porter is dominant.
Delicious and full flavored.
Heavy taste of dark, creamy chocolate, rich roasted malt,
with an amazing backdrop of cinnamon, and nutmeg.
The chocolate flavor is strong and slightly bittersweet.
Delicious, rich cocoa and roasty chocolate malt.
The spices are not overpowering and strong upfront,
more like seasoning in the background, as spices should be.
The aftertaste, and mouthfeel, is pure cinnamon.
If the idea of a chocolate pumpkin spice porter is at all appealing to you, then you will love this beer.
It tastes like an excellent example of exactly that.
If you hate chocolate malty porters and pumpkin pie spices, avoid this, you won't like it.
Will be drinking more bottles next month.
Happy Halloween!
Vigorous pour produced bubbly head.
Glad I picked up multiple bottles.

Devilicious Devilution

If you squint your ears he seems to be singing Devilicious
........
Devilicious is my favorite Food Truck in San Diego
San Diego, California
Devilicious actually has two trucks so they can be in two places at once.
Deviliciously ingenius.
Butter Poached Lobster Grilled Cheese Sandwich
Devilicious's Signature Dish
( Lobster, Melted Cheeses, Caramelized Onion, Oven Roasted Roma Tomato
on Butter Toasted Sourdough.)
Rich, creamy, chewy and delicious. Emphasis on rich.
Rich from the lobster and no I don't mean it's expensive. Well it is expensive but
it also tastes very lobstery, which is a good thing.
Too many places overcook lobster and turn it into a rubbery mess.
 Devilicious gets it right.
The crispy toasted bread takes it over the edge.
I might prefer this to a lobster quesadilla for the texture of the toasted bread.
Pretty much blows away a soggy tortilla.
Very tasty and worth the effort to locate them just for this alone.
All Crab Crab Cake Sandwich
Make it Benedict Style with a Fried Egg
Toasted Sourdough English Muffin.
I do not believe I had ever had an egg on crab before.
Wow, glad we took the recommendation and went for it.
This sandwich is already pretty dang good
and better than most "Crab Cake" sandwiches
that can be had most anywhere. But they usually use Krab. Or better yet..."Fish"
All Crab meat makes a difference. The egg just put it over the top. Delicious.
Usually my wife works her way around a menu and doesn't like to repeat so she can try different things. Apparently she really enjoyed the CCC because on our second visit she got it again.
Blackened Prime Rib Sandwich
(Shredded Lettuce, Red Onion, Horseradish Sour Cream on French Roll.)
I love prime rib, and I tore this sandwich up. Too much bread for the amount of the perfectly prepared, not actually Blackened, meat though. Of course I would prefer it with like at least twice the meat.
Then again, I am a pig.
Burger Du Jour
Bacon Cheeseburger
As you can see, it's served on butter-toasted bread rather than a bun.
I prefer it this way although I never knew that before.
Quite possibly the second or third best burger I have ever had.
The meat was cooked to perfection, on the rare side of medium, incredibly juicy.
Highly seasoned and devilicious. Peppery, savory and definitely delicious.
See how they get the cheese on the edges to get sort of crispy?
This burger was a gooey, tasty mess.
The bacon was thick and delicious, but a tad undercooked.
I would prefer it a bit crispier, especially to go with such a juicy meat patty.
It did not keep it from being one of the single greatest burgers ever, just nit-picking.
The bread is soft and perfect. The meat seasoned to perfection, moist and juicy.
Ample cheese, nice and creamy. So yeah, my one suggestion to just totally push this beast over the edge: crispier bacon.
 Cubano (Cuban Sandwich)
(Virginia Ham, Pulled Pork, Swiss Cheese, Pickle, Onion, Dijon)
I have never been to Cuba. I don't know anything about Cuban Food but I love Cuban Sandwiches.
Not too easy to find around here but I always enjoy them when I do.
Whenever I watch Dexter and they order these Cubanos at the roadside stands I crave them. Then I have to find one. Fortunately Devilicious  makes one and it is a buttery, creamy, cheesy, tangy, tasty slice of deliciousness. Double dose of pork; ham and pulled are what makes it unique.
Also the addition of mustard and pickle.
Devilicious excels at variations on grilled cheese sandwiches.
I love that they keep changing and experimenting with different menu items.
Truffled Parmesan Fries
Fantastic fries. More of the Belgium style that is sort of becoming popular, and that's a good thing. A great thing actually. The truffle oil adds a lot of flavor and because of it I do not find it necessary to smother ketchup on them. They are the perfect size. I prefer the thinner type over the huge thick ones. Also, perfect texture, not too soggy but not fried to a crisp. Just a great balanced freedom fry.
The parmesan adds even more creamy and tangy flavor. Love these fries.
I just wish they still had Satan Fries!
I don't even know what Satan Fries are. They just sound awesome.

Please bring back Satan Fries

Smuggler's Cove

Traditional drinks of the Caribbean islands
Classic libations of Prohibition-era Havana
Exotic cocktails from legendary Tiki bars
The past, present, and future of a remarkable spirit:
RUM

...........
Entering Smuggler's Cove and descending these stairs is like
stepping into a Time Machine, or at least a Time Warp.
A time where pre-mixed artificially sweetened vodka cocktails do not exist.
An alternate universe, a wondrous place, where drinks are hand crafted,
with natural, fresh ingredients, and worth waiting for.

As you immerse yourself in this wondrous environment, you will experience...
proper music played at perfect volume, not too loud that it drowns conversation,
but audible. Provides a pleasant background for the cozy setting,
sets a mood.
(like wallpaper, as Martin Denny called it)
Thank Lono, No Televisions.
Demerara Dry Float
"Dry and Tart. A vibrant mix of exotic passion fruit, lemon, lime, and demerara rum..
...served with a side of danger."
The Side of Danger is Lemon Hart Demerara 151 Rum.
There is 80 proof Demerara in the drink.
Demerara has a wonderful taste and is one of my favorite types of rum.
Fresh squeezed lemon and lime along with passion fruit mix perfectly tart
for an outstanding, refreshing, complex and simply perfect cocktail,
pretty much unavailable anywhere else.
The key is not too sweet. Perfectly tart and dry, as in not syrupy.
Now the debate rages on regarding whether or not to stir in the added shot or let it float as the ice slowly melts and blends it in. I personally prefer to let it float, especially in this drink, as the name clearly states.
Allowing the rum float to slowly blend with the rest of the drink also keeps it from becoming too watered down as a result of the melting ice.
Delicious.
Best Cocktail Bar in San Francisco.
Best Rum Bar on Earth.

3 Floyds Hell's Black Intelligencer

Oatmeal Stout
6% ABV. 28 IBU
On Tap at Pizza Port: Carlsbad, California.
Munster, Indiana

Beautiful deep, dark espresso color.
Bitchen beige bubble buildup.
Smells like dark roasted, iced coffee.
Tastes, unsurprisingly but nonetheless wonderful, of rich,
dark roasted, earthy coffee.
With that amazing backdrop of chocolate malt.
At first it was heavier on the bittersweet rich coffee flavors with a hint of
sweet and creamy roasty chocolate goodness lingering in the background.
As it warmed the luscious chocolate flavors intensified and it was even better.
Perhaps because it is an oatmeal stout the creamy oat goodness made it more chewy and creamy.
Incredibly tasty and an excellent chocolaty, creamy, coffee stout.
I would love to try this with a higher ABV, and/or barrel-aged.
Thank you 3 Floyds. Thank you Pizza Port.

Chicken Tikka Masala Burrito

San Francisco, California
In front of the steps at San Francisco City Hall,
we ran across this amazing food truck accidentally.
Later learned they have more than one truck and apparently an actual restaurant.
We were discussing where and what to eat and couldn't decide between big burritos or maybe some Thai or Indian Food. Then we saw several trucks including this one, which, according to this..
was well liked and voted Best Of the Bay.
Menu listed Chicken Tikka Masala Burritos.
Done deal. Chicken Tikka Masala is one of my all time favorite meals.
I also pretty much enjoy any kind of burrito you're layin' down.
Two great things together again for the first time.
Why didn't I think of this?
Big huge onion slice for first bite. Only the beginning...
Chicken Tikka Masala Burrito
This just kept getting better and better with every bite.
Oh my Kali, this is just ridiculously delicious.
Pretty much exactly as good as I imagined it to be...
It's Chicken Tikka Masala, in a Burrito!
Large chunks of organic (Fulton Valley) chicken breast, nicely cooked.
Decent amount of tangy rice. Basmati? I don't know, but it was good.
Just enough sauce to make it spicy, gooey and tasty without being a sloppy mess.
The spice level was excellent for me, hot enough to make it interesting
 but not an endurance test.
Bottom Line:
Holy Grail of Indian Mexican Fusion.

Alesmith Decadence Dead By Dawn

Electric Frankenstein: Dead By Dawn

2006 Barrel Aged Decadence
Imperial Evil Dead Red Ale aka...
Dead By Dawn
American Strong Ale
11% ABV
The 2006 Decadence was aged in Heaven Hill Bourbon Barrels
San Diego, California
"Dead by Dawn, was inspired by our own seasonal specialty ale, Evil Dead Red.
What if we made it bigger, bolder and even more evil?"
 Trick Or Treat?
Definitely a Treat.
Been enjoying this on tap lately in the Alesmith Tasting Room.
Color is a nice deep dark reddish-brown.
Smells like a bourbon barrel aged stout. Rich smell of oaky vanilla, and caramel.
First sip is a whole different thing though, almost like a trick. A tasty, complex, evil trick. Taste is deliciously sour. The bourbon barrel aging characteristics are there but this is unlike any other BBA Ale I have had. Along with the sweet flavors from the Heaven Hill Bourbon Barrels; vanilla, caramel, & toffee, there is also an unexpected, wonderful sour taste of apple cider vinegar which blends with the already flavorful
 toffee, dates, and chocolate maltiness.
Makes this Ale into a Monster.
Bottom Line:
This is one hell of a brew.
COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Alesmith's Decadence Anniversary Ale was originally brewed in 2005 to celebrate our first decade in business. The brewers at Alesmith had such a great time concocting Decadence that they decided to make it an annual event, and brew a new style each year to commemorate our Anniversary.

Alesmith Evil Dead Red

Evil Dead by Zeke

San Diego,California
6.66% ABV
Halloween Seasonal Red Ale
(A 2006 Version of this was aged in Heaven Hill Bourbon Barrels
and is called Dead By Dawn)

On Tap at Tasting Room
Piney, citrusy hop smell.
Tastes pretty much the same.
Caramel malt background. Strong hop flavors up front.
Sweet, tangy citrus taste and slightly resinous mouthfeel.
Grapefruit, caramel, and pine.
Dry, crisp, piney finish.
Overall, somewhat similar to Port's Shark Attack. Perhaps it's a West Coast Red.
Meaning hop heavy, with a subtler, underlying malt background.
Had this on tap, very fresh, at Brewery.
Bottom Line:
 6.66 %
